SOLAR ECLIPSE
We tried our best, but the cloud cover wasn't in our favor on Monday. However, our students still celebrated all they learned about the eclipse by enjoying Sun Chips, Capri-Suns, and Moon Pies!
K-4 FIELD TRIP
Our Elementary students in Grades K-4 enjoyed their Field Trip last week to the Houston Museum of Natural Science! After starting the morning with a special prayer and blessing with Father Christian, our students journeyed downtown to enjoy interactive exhibits on space, prehistoric life, animal habitats, chemistry, ancient Egypt, and so much more! These activities were fun and memorable supplements to our curriculum, reinforcing the lessons students are learning in the classroom.

CLASSICAL CORNER
Exploring Classical Education
at St. Edward: Part 4
Last month, we shared what Classical Education looks like at the Elementary grade level or Grammar School. This month, we will look at our Jr. High or Logic School (Grades 6-8), and how our students experience classical education in their daily coursework.
Reading and vocabulary is literature based including analysis of complex literary themes and character development. Language development continues into Jr. High with an increased focus on grammar rules. Math is leveled for remediation along with acceleration based on the individual student’s needs. God’s design of our world is taught in Science class using a classical textbook and the science fair in order to build inquiry and exploration skills. Religion and History (Humanities) explore the development of civilizations including the development of Christianity through the lives of the saints using lecture-based programs. Historical events are presented chronologically with connections to the Bible and analysis of themes throughout the historical timeline. Catholic traditions are woven throughout school life, including monthly adoration, Friday and Holy Day Masses, the Rosary, Latin hymns, Angelus, morning and 3 o'clock prayers, Stations of the Cross, and retreat leadership.

EXPLORATORY MEETING:
CAMPUS EXPANSION & IMPROVEMENT

REPURPOSE YOUR ECLIPSE GLASSES
TACHUS Fiber Internet will be collecting eclipse glasses to send to Latin America for children there to use for the annular solar eclipse that will be visible in South America later this year. FIRST COMMUNION

PE SPOTLIGHT: CARDIO DRUMMING AND SPEED STACKING
Our PE program has been busy as students have enjoyed developing their hand eye coordination, reflexes, and concentration with cardio drumming and speed stacking!
If your student loved speed stacking, consider purchasing them their own set! More information is being sent home, but every order purchased through our school link benefits our school, helping to purchase equipment for our PE program!

8TH GRADE CAREER
EXPLORATION FAIR
Our 8th graders have been busy this year as they worked on a cross-curricular Career Exploration project! Students started the project with the Take Flight Learning DISC assessment, which helped them understand both their own personality’s strengths and weaknesses and how to work with different personalities. Additionally, the DISC assessment provided a list of potential occupations that fit with their personality type.
Students then chose one career from their list that interested them to research in each of their core classes. In Religion, students researched the Saint that represented their career. In ELA, students researched colleges and universities associated with the career while in History, students researched the career itself. In Science class, students created a career hypothesis and worked on goal setting, while also reflecting on how they could approach their chosen career with a servant’s heart.
Finally, in Computer class, students combined all the information they had researched into a 2-minute presentation that they then shared with our 5th-7th graders during our Career Exploration Fair. Our younger Junior High students also took notes on the projects and will be writing reflections as they begin to think about their own futures.
The Career Exploration Project is a fantastic example of cross-curriculum learning we focus on here at St. Edward Catholic School! We are so excited about our students’ futures!
FIELD DAY REMINDERS
We are so excited for our Field Day coming up on Friday, April 19! Students who ordered Field Day shirts will have them sent home next week. On Field Day, students* may wear their Field Day shirts with shorts and tennis shoes to school. Shorts must be fingertip length and any sunscreen or bug spray must be applied at home. Please review pages 32-33 of the Handbook for further guidelines.

As our first graders are leading Mass on April 19, we are asking their class to wear their Mass uniforms to school and to bring their Field Day clothes. First grade students will be able to change into Field Day clothes following Mass.

Aloha from our 2nd annual Family Dance! It was a wonderful time last week as our St. Edward Catholic School community came together for one of our favorite fellowship events of the year. Delicious food, fantastic interactive entertainment, and lots of dancing made for an amazing night of family and fun! Thank you to our event coordinator, Melissa Correa, and our volunteers for making this such a standout experience. Can't wait for next year!

Thank you to everyone who attended our Smart Families Family Dinner on Tuesday! Parents and children enjoyed a delicious dinner, followed by a presentation and exercise led by Dr. Collier that helped each member of the family identify the values and rules important to them in order to craft their individual Family Code. We are so thankful to Smart Families, Shaping Souls for guiding us on this mission of focusing on family!

STUDENT COUNCIL FUNDRAISER
The Student Council would like to thank everyone who donated to their 50/50 fundraiser! Donations totaled $750, which means the Loving Choice Pregnancy Care Center will receive a check for $375, and the Student Council plans to put their money towards the improvements being done in the front of the school building.

CHEER TEAM SIGN UP FOR 2024-25
Cheerleading Sign-Up Commitment is open for next school year. Please contact Coaches Adrienne and Theresa at (adrienne.laroe@gmail.com). SECS Cheer Camp will be held at the end of July (July 29-31) at Frassati High School. Cost varies depending on number of participants (usually between $210-$225 each cheerleader for 3 days of daytime camp).

The St. Edward Athletic Department will take the time to recognize our girls and boys basketball, track, and cheer leading teams on April 25. All athletes attending the event NEED to wear either their spirit shirt with jeans or their uniform (all school dress code approved). St. Edward Parish is taking a group to Catholic Heart Workcamp (CHWC) in Mongomery, AL from July 15-21. Father Christian will join us for workcamp! Camp is for rising 9th graders. Payment plans and fundraising opportunities are available.
This camp is about learning to share the love of Christ as we serve the neglected, brokenhearted and the marginalized in any way needed. Equally, it is to inspire participants to live as disciples of Christ through serving others as a way of life; and to foster the Catholic Faith of each participant through the sacraments, prayer and involvement in social service.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
St. Edward Catholic Church will host Vacation Bible School Monday June 10-14. The theme is Marvelous Mystery: The Mass Comes Alive and this week of fun and faith provides an opportunity for our young parishioners to sing, play, be with their peers and learn about the faith in dynamic ways. This event is open for children in PK4-5th grade (for 2024-2025 academic year).

MONARCH MATRIARCHS: CHRISTMAS PARTY

FIRST GRADE GINGERBREAD
Throughout December, our first graders enjoy holiday-themed lessons that build their creativity, writing, fine-motor, and description skills. Last week was Gingerbread Week, where students created their own gingerbread character, crafted sticker gingerbread houses, and even tasted real gingerbread!
